ig.me links: a trackable DM link for every campaign
ig.me links: a trackable DM link for every campaign
Build the link by hand in ten seconds — Chatfuel catches the ref, files the link in automations, and every lead it brings stays attributed to it
An ig.me link opens a DM with your client’s Instagram account from anywhere you can paste a URL — the bio, a story, a QR code on a flyer, an email footer. Give each placement its own link, and two questions answer themselves: which placement produced this lead (attribution) and what should the bot say to them (a scenario per link). It’s the organic-traffic twin of per-ad scenarios — no ad spend required.
What an ig.me link is
ig.me is Instagram’s official short link for direct messages — the Instagram equivalent of Messenger’s m.me. Anyone who taps it lands in a DM thread with the account, ready to type.
The ref tag is what turns a convenience link into a campaign tool: distinct refs make otherwise identical links distinguishable, one per campaign, offer, or placement.
What a ref can contain
Up to 2,083 characters — letters, numbers, and -, _, = only. In practice a short, readable tag is all you need.
Build the link
There’s no link generator to find in Chatfuel — and nothing to configure up front. The link is yours to write:
Take the client’s username
The handle of the connected Instagram account — for @brightsmile.clinic, the base link is https://ig.me/m/brightsmile.clinic.
Append a ref
Add ?ref= and a tag that names the campaign and the placement: https://ig.me/m/brightsmile.clinic?ref=summer-promo_bio.
What happens in Chatfuel
The first time a lead taps one of your links, Chatfuel catches the ref and creates a link object in automations automatically — no setup on your side. From that moment:
- The link has its own slot in the automations hierarchy — Main bot → Source → Object. Attach a scenario to it in Automations, or tell the Co-Worker: “For the summer-promo bio link, lead with the July discount and ask for a preferred date.” Everything you don’t override is inherited.
- Leads stay attributed to the link. Every conversation it opens is pinned to that exact link — in reporting, “which placement produced this lead” has a precise answer.
- The link switches an open conversation. Like an ad click, an ig.me link is a deliberate entry point carrying campaign intent — if the lead already has a conversation going, tapping the link switches it to the link’s scenario.
Where to put it
The payoff compounds: every placement gets a scenario matched to its context, and the client’s report shows exactly which placements are worth doubling down on.
Where to next
The pinning model that keeps every lead tied to the link that produced it.
The paid-traffic twin — a scenario for every ad ID on the list.
The two-minute connection every ig.me link depends on.
Turn per-link attribution into the client report.
